The Rio Linda Elverta Chamber of Commerce explains flag etiquette ahead of Memorial Day Weekend

With Memorial Day Weekend just around the corner, the Rio Linda Elverta Chamber of Commerce has issued a timely reminder about flag etiquette and protocol. Many people often wonder about the appropriate way to display the American flag on this solemn occasion. The Chamber is here to guide you on how to honor the fallen heroes and demonstrate your pride.

So, what exactly should you do with your flag on Memorial Day?

The observance of flag etiquette on Memorial Day holds a special significance. At the break of dawn, raise your flag to the top briskly, and then lower it to half-staff, where it should remain until noon. At noon, it’s time to raise the flag to full-staff, where it will proudly fly for the rest of the holiday. If you have a wall bracket offering two positions, place the flag pole in the lower position until noon, and then return it to its original position.

In the event that you are unable to display the flag at half-staff on Memorial Day, it’s important to adhere to proper etiquette. To show respect and acknowledge the solemnity of the day, attach a black mourning ribbon or streamer to your flag. Remove the ribbon or streamer at noon, as the day transitions to a time of remembrance and gratitude.

Let us all come together on Memorial Day to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. By following these flag etiquette guidelines, we can pay tribute to their memory in a dignified and respectful manner.
